CRIT

For the crit I showed both my video: One with text and one without text.

There was a unanimous decision that the video without the text was far better that the one without as it distracted you from the video content, personally I also agree with this; I had a lot of trouble trying to fit my text into the video as it was more than an after thought and I could not find a style or even a place in my video that I wanted to put text over; it just did not accompany the underlying video well.

One suggestion is that I have the "Ask not that your country can do for you but what you can do for your country" as large typeface over the video with the flames, I will try this out but again I don't really want to cover that part up because that is one of my favourite parts in the video.

Seeing other people's videos as well gave me some ideas on footage, I really liked a clip in Lucy's video it was of the sun reflecting on a car which also had a great texture of the sky and dashboard combined (i think) which was then followed by the water dripping on an aluminium type surface that really fitted with the previous clip. Also I liked Bradley's idea of zooming in and out of focus and not revealing what he was doing until the very end, it keeps you interested in the video. I also liked Hayleys abstract clips that she featured behind her text, it has given me some ideas of other items I could shoot.

Choosing the font/style for my video.

The first font that I thought of using in my video is American Type Writer font, it fits in with the time of the speech and the black and white style that I have used on some video.

To decide the placement of the text I will look at the audio and see how JFK spoke specific words, the words that he emphasised etc.

After trying a few words in american typewriter, I don't think that it really suits the style of video
Therefore I am going to try using helvetica as well as a few other fonts I think would fit. I have chosen more grungy kinds of fonts.

Video - My thoughts - Mid project review

At the point where I have the purple liquid falling I think that it goes on for a little to long and needs to be shortened, the second thing that I have noticed is that there are a lot of flashing elements in the video especially at the beginning, so ill go over the video and change some of them.

Review
So far so good, I have shot a good amount of video and edited a lot of it into a structured, logical order.
I have now got the text to think about applying text to my video. Learning FCPX didn't take as long as i thought and my first time editing on the programme looks pretty good.

What have I achieved so far?
So far so good, I have shot a good amount of video and edited a lot of it into a structured, logical order.

What unforeseen problems did I encounter?
I had only a small storage space available for recording onto so I had to repeatedly remove and download the footage and then place the card back in the camera, i now however have a couple of 16gb hi-speed cards for shooting the rest.

What delayed my work?
When un-commpressing my HD video it did take quite a long time to complete

What helped to advance my work?
The snow helped a lot I was able to get some shots that I would not have been as good if there hadn't have been any snow.

Video without text

Polaroid image sequence

First of alI I imported my desired clips into After Clips and created a new composition.

Using the pen tool a drew around my first polaroid image, this creates the mask.

Then I selected the time vary stop watch so that the mask moved as it went frame by frame, this meant that i had a polaroid falling with out any sky.

Then for each frame I repeated the process and dragged out the mask to match the next frame, I also repeated it for each video of each polaroid.

Then I added a sky to the background, I chose to use moving clouds as it looked more realistic than just a plain blue sky.

By doing this process it means that I can change the direction, size, orientation, layer that its on, opacity and speed, therefore I can move around my clips to suit my video, I used this technique to land the last polaroid onto the camera.

I aligned the polaroid with my next video clip that it would fade into.

I then started with this clip by having it zoomed in and then panning out which revealed more of the fire.

Video shoot

I have shot about 75% of my video content and as I though I do not have enough space so will be using the external drives, I have shot 30gb of video which has been transcoded to about 100gb+ of video.

When shooting I shot as many angles as I could I also changed how close I was and tried some different lighting, that way I have a lot of video to work with and saves me going back to reshoot and re-set up the scene which would waste time.

My first lot of shooting involved rice an incents stick, to be honest this was a bit of a failure I got one ok shot of rice falling but i probably would not use it anyway, the incents stick would have looked good if i could have got close enough but i could not so i left the incents stick and rice idea.

My next shoot was much more productive, I started to shoot the ideas and angles that i had previously looked at, also by doing this I came across new objects and circumstances that I wanted to shoot.
For example when I wanted to shoot my glass paper weight when I placed it down to shoot the sun shined upon it and gave me a great shadow.

After doing this I had the idea to have writing on my hand and do a similar movement to the ones i did with the latex gloves, similar to these:

I came to this idea after i had tried to write on the latex gloves, the ink didn't dry properly and it was incredibly difficult to write on the latex as it kept wrinkling up and distorting the text.

Video technology & editing style & Shooting

Video technology

I will be shooting on a Canon D60
The D60 shoots at 1080p at 30 frames a second as well as 720p at 60 fps at 16:9 ratio.
I will be using the higher frame rate for objects in my scene that move faster and then the higher definition for objects in my scene that do not move as much.

I will be editing on FCPX then using after effects and motion where I need e.g advanced video effects and text.

Once I have shot my film I will be using compressor to change my file format to proress 422 so that it is easier/quicker to edit and render, the only problem I have for this is that prores makes much bigger file sizes and I will most likely not fit on my 120gb ssd.

To be able to use video from an external drive I will use 2x external drives in raid 1 using Firewire 800, this should give sufficient speeds so that my video frame rate does not drop. If it comes to it I could also use proxy media so that it uses less bandwidth.

Editing style

The style of editing I am going for is quick cuts that are timed perfectly with the audio, I have also decided that I will be using the bad Tv effect I tried earlier with the video clips to make it look older and more exciting. I will also be using some of the other filters I experimented with earlier such as the bleach, crisp contrast as well as others. I will also be using slow-motion video and video that has been sped up that will go with the objects I have a chosen and analysed together with the speech.

Shooting

When shooting I need to look at:

Lighting - my scene needs to be well lit so that the camera picks it up well and the image is sharp, in focus and has balanced colour.
Angles - I will be shooting as many angles as possible so that I have a wide variety of shots to use, this will also save time as if i needed to re-shoot for a specific angle i would have to set up again and the conditions may not be the same.
Speed- ISO speed for shooting moving objects will be key to keep them sharp and un-blurred I can also adjust the FPS of the video as well

in-depth analysis of speech ready for source of potential clips

In the long history of the world, (reminds me of old things, been around for a long time, something that has expressed history to generation, radio springs to mind - slow, stuttered, distorted)

Only a few generations (certain people, items/objects only a certain generation would know, b&w TV, inventions of the 60's: audio cassette, handheld calculator. Objects that aren't common anymore: telephones with the dial - small amount of objects, quick, short clips)

Have been granted the role (given, honoured, something with a specific purpose - could be anything, matches, food, plants - rolling footage (bad tv))

Of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. (freedom, space: sky, clouds, sea, land - wide open spaces), (danger, scary: loud, fast paced, flashing: flame, the result of danger: grave yard - mysterious, dark, flashes of light)

I do not shrink from this responsibility - I welcome it. ((shrink, small, tight, stretchy: flower (new to old - stop motion, fast, timed shots), latex gloves (responsibility to protect - stretchy, strong.) welcome, strong, responsible: structure: bridge, pier - close ups, main components, rust).

I do not believe (edit changes on each word) that any of us would exchange places with any other people or any other generation. (generation as above?)

The energy, (speed up clip, maybe of the bike, latex gloves(less literal)) the faith (changes, believe that it will change?) the devotion (love/hate, loyalty, flagwhich we (together, solely) bring to this endeavour (struggle) will light our country and all who serve it -- and the glow from that fire can truly light the world.

And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country.
